State Treasurer John Perdue’s Unclaimed Property Division will soon release another bulletin containing names of unclaimed property rightful owners.
The bulletins, containing approximately 15,000 previously unpublished names, are scheduled for print newspaper insertion on three consecutive Thursdays -- March 19, March 26 and April 2. They will be inserted into the largest newspaper in each of the state’s 55 counties, with some designated for direct home delivery.
The inserts, called “Discovery,” will feature not only the names of rightful owners but a short feature on a Huntington church reunited with nearly $75,000 and some tips on how not to let one’s assets wind up in the state’s unclaimed property program.
Unclaimed property is any financial asset from which an individual has become unintentionally separated. Examples include forgotten utility deposits, life insurance benefits and left-behind safe deposit box contents. Despite its name, real estate does not play a part in unclaimed property.
Treasurer Perdue’s Unclaimed Property Division has returned more than $220 million in lost financial assets since he took office in January of 1997.
